Abstract

Background: Celiac disease is a chronic, autoimmune, inflammatory disorder of the small intestine, triggered by gluten. Genetic predisposition is determined by human leukocyte antigen (HLA) haplotypes, specifically HLA-DQ2 and/or HLA-DQ8, which are present in approximately 30 % of the population; however, only about 1 % develop the disease. Its prevalence is higher in Western countries and it is frequently observed in patients with type 1 diabetes, Down syndrome, among others.
Objective: To determine the current prevalence of HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8 haplotypes in adult patients.
Methods: A descriptive, observational, cross-sectional study was conducted in patients attending the Caja de Seguro Social. DNA was extracted using the DNeasy Blood kit (Qiagen) by Qiacube, and simultaneous detection was performed through end-point PCR with strip hybridization.
Results: A total of 72 patients were analyzed. Based on the results, HLA-DQ2 was the most prevalent (55 %), while HLA-DQ8 was detected in 45.3 %.
Conclusion: Our findings demonstrate that the HLA-DQ2 haplotype was the most prevalent in this study. However, the overall risk remains moderate to high for the development of celiac disease, suggesting that it may represent a potential future risk factor.
